Most land between $280 and $400. Labour is $150 and the panel is charged at cost, usually $130 to $250. Premium, touch and OLED displays run higher, and on a high-end ultrabook the panel alone can be $450 or more. We confirm the exact panel price with you before ordering anything.

Because part costs vary enormously on laptops. A laptop screen might be $130 or $500 for the same amount of work. Quoting labour separately means you pay what the part actually costs us landed, freight included, rather than an average that punishes cheaper machines. Everything else on this page is a fixed price.

Our rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about 60% of a comparable replacement, replace it. On a $600 laptop that rules out most major repairs. On a $3,000 MacBook it rules out almost nothing. We'll tell you which side of the line you're on before you commit, even if it means we don't get the job.

On board-level work, the $70 assessment is all you pay if it can't be repaired or we try and don't get there. On everything else, if the diagnostic tells us the machine isn't worth fixing, you've paid $70 for a straight answer rather than a guess.

A charge port soldered to the board is a known job on a known part, so we can put a price on it. Board-level diagnosis of an unknown fault isn't, which is why that one has a minimum rather than a price.

Not usually. Most repairs don't touch your drive at all. Where there's any risk, or the work involves the operating system, we'll talk to you about a backup first. Backup is $70 while the machine is already open. On a drive replacement we always return your old drive.

It stays in our workshop and isn't sent anywhere. We don't go through your files, and if a job needs us in Windows we'll ask you for the password rather than working around it.

One to two days on simple fixes. More involved work can run to a week or more. Neither of those includes parts, which normally take about a week to ship, and we'll tell you the expected wait before we order anything.

Yes, always happy to take a second look. Depending on the fault we might end up at the same conclusion, and sometimes we can tell you that over the phone before you make the trip. If a machine arrives with existing damage or signs someone has been inside it, we photograph it before we start so there's no argument later about what was already there.

90 days on our workmanship.
Where a part comes with its own manufacturer's warranty, you get that too and we'll honour it: fit an SSD with three years on it and you've got three years on the drive.
Component-level parts don't carry a manufacturer's warranty of their own, so those are covered by the 90 days. It doesn't cover new physical damage, liquid damage after the repair, or faults unrelated to the work we did.

Better not to. The screws pull out of the plastic behind the hinge, the housing cracks around the corner, and left long enough it takes the bezel and sometimes the panel with it. Early on it's a hinge and a housing. Later on it's a hinge, a housing and a screen.

This is worth understanding.
A genuine battery for a laptop a few years old is usually old stock, and lithium cells degrade on the shelf whether used or not, so a five-year-old genuine battery can be worse than a good current aftermarket one. The cheapest aftermarket cells are genuinely poor.
What matters is whose cells are inside, not whose sticker is on the outside. We'll tell you which one we'd fit and why before ordering.

On a badly degraded one, a lot. One recent laptop went from 45 minutes to six hours of video playback unplugged. That's the good end of the range rather than typical, but if yours won't hold an hour you'll notice immediately.

Right now, usually not. Memory prices are four to five times what they were in 2024 and the shortage is expected to run into 2027, so a 32GB kit that used to be under $100 can be $500 or more. The labour is trivial, the parts are not. If your machine is otherwise fine, this is a bad year to buy memory and we'll say so rather than sell you a stick.

Sometimes, and it depends on what got wet and how long ago. Corrosion keeps spreading long after the machine feels dry, so a spill we see this week is a very different job to one that's been in a cupboard for a month. Assessment is $70. If it's a write-off we get your files off it and write the report your insurer needs.

Yes. MacBook screens, keyboards, trackpads, batteries and liquid damage. MacBook screen replacement is $200 labour plus the display assembly, usually $400 to $600 and up to $1,000 on current Pro models. On 2014 to 2019 iMacs the drive upgrade is the job worth doing. We don't replace glued iMac screens or do hardware work on the current Apple silicon iMacs.

Yes, any weekday between 10am and 6pm. There's someone here every weekday. Saturday the workshop is closed, though the phone is on 10am to 2pm. We appreciate a call or text before you drop it in, but walk ins are welcome any time.

Yes, for jobs where the work is at the machine, and it's $40. Anything that needs the bench comes back to Ottoway, and anything with waiting built into it, like reinstalls and data transfers, is cheaper as a workshop job because we can walk away while it runs. Onsite visits and collections run on set days each week and book out, so please schedule ahead of time
